Fluoride Varnish
What is Fluoride? Fluoride is a natural chemical that strengthens teeth and also helps reverse early stages of tooth decay. What is Fluoride varnish and why is it important for my child? Fluoride varnish is a protective coating that can be painted onto your child’s teeth by a provider to help prevent cavities and/or stop cavities that have already started. How does it work? Your pediatrician will paint the Fluoride varnish onto your child’s teeth. It does not have a bad taste and it will dry very quickly. Your child’s teeth may appear yellow after the application but this will only last until your child’s teeth are brushed. After the application: • DO NOT brush your child’s teeth until the next morning. • DO NOT allow your child to each hard, chewy or sticky food until the next day. Community Health Centers of Pinellas is one of the few medical health centers providing fluoride varnish to children. We recognize the value of a complete healthy start in children, including dental health.
